Zakres tematów:

25.02.21: The importance of discussion and debate skills for doctoral students and faculty (typical situations, objectives, golden rules and practices)

11.03.21: Expressing one’s own opinion on academic issues (language for expressing opinions, asking and thanking for contribution)

18.03.21: Arguing for a thesis (proper argument construction, avoiding fallacies); Supporting an argument (types of evidence, proper way of citing sources, paraphrasing sources)

25.03.21: Practical task 1: Expressing an opinion on an assigned topic concerning the future of university studies

08.04.21: Practical task 1 cont.

15.04.21: Summarizing other people’s arguments (listening for gist, paraphrasing, language for referring to opinions of others)

22.04.21: Arguing against a presented view (golden rules of behavior, language for rebutting other people’s arguments, evidence used in rebuttals)

29.04.21: Practical task 2: Presenting a critical summary of a controversial view in the participants’ field of study (with a follow-up written assignment arguing for an alternative view or theory)

13.05.21: Debating: forms, situations, guidelines, examples

20.05.21: Debate preparation in groups; function of debate judges

27.05.21: Practical task 3: moderated class debate on a current university issue (in two sets of opposing groups, with judges)

10.06.21: Discussing academic issues (functions and objectives of discussion; distinction from debate; language for participating in and chairing a discussion)

17.06.21: Practical task 4: small group discussions on a student selected topic, with a leader and a judge)

Metody dydaktyczne:

Task-based learning, aimed at developing productive oral skills, notably speaking, discussion and debating skills, by engaging participants in a structured series of realistic tasks, allowing them to express their opinions, argue for or against, discuss and debate academic issues, as well as summarize such activities in speech and writing (learning by doing).
