General data

Course ID: 1300-OGPR1ZC
Erasmus code / ISCED: 11.101 The subject classification code consists of three to five digits, where the first three represent the classification of the discipline according to the Discipline code list applicable to the Socrates/Erasmus program, the fourth (usually 0) - possible further specification of discipline information, the fifth - the degree of subject determined based on the year of study for which the subject is intended. / (0541) Mathematics The ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education) code has been designed by UNESCO.
Course title: Descriptive geometry
Name in Polish: Geometria przestrzenna
Organizational unit: Faculty of Geology
Course groups: Requisite subjects for the first semester first year of first degree studies in prospecting geology
ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

(in Polish) Student powinien posiadać podstawową wiedzę z:

- geometrii rzutowej,

- geometrii euklidesowej.

Short description:

The projection with elevations: projection of points, lines, planes, analysis of mutual relations of geometric figures in space and flat projection – conditions of parallelism and perpendicularity and measurement issues –true length and angles.

Presentation of the parameters of geological structural surface on a map: selection of scale in geological works, apparent and true dips of structural surfaces.

Geometrical analysis of basic geological structures: monoclines, synclines, anticlines and faults. Monge‘s projections.

Full description:

Exercises include:

Introduction to the marking projection: principle of determining the projection of the point, marking of the line, modulus and inclination of the line, image of the plane in the projection with elevations – 4 hours.

The line of intersection of planes, revolution of a plane perpendicular to the projective plane, piercing point of the plane by a line – 2 hours.

Perpendicularity of a line and plane as well as two planes – 1 hour.

Revolution of a plane inclined to the projective plane against the contour line of plane – 1 hour.

Measurement issues on a plane inclined to the projective plane – 2 hours.

Measurement structures. Determination of true lengths and angles in the projection with elevations – 4 hours.

Determination of contour lines of plane of structural surfaces on maps:

- based on drilling results

- based on measurements of strike and dip – 2 hours.

Intersections of a geological layer with the surface of the terrain, edges of intersection of structural geological surfaces, principles of performing geological cross-section – 4 hours.

Determination of measurement (angles and lines-true length) parameters of geological structures.

Determination of true dips of geological layers based on measurements on walls of geological outcrops (quarry) – 2 hours.

Geometrical charactaristic of basic geological structures: monoclines, anticlines and synclines – 6 hours.

Geometrical characteristic of monocline intersected by a fault – 2 hours.

Learning outcomes:

After the course a student:

draws basic elements of space on a plane in the projection with elevations,

analyses mutual relations of geometrical elements in space and in flat projection – perpendicularity and parallelism,

determines measurement structures: angles and true length,

presents parameters of geological structural surface on a map,

determines true strike and dip on the basis of the results of drilling,

determines true strike and dip on the basis of measurements conducted on walls of geological outcrops,

determines true thickness of a layer on the basis of the results of drilling,

uses the principles of geological intersection,

analyses the geological structure on the basis of an intersection map as well as morphological and geological cross-section.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Obtaining a sufficient number of points from quizes and two big tests.

Proper performance of two drawing works.
