A 30-hour practical course of public speaking for doctoral students interested in developing their ability to effectively present research projects and their results.
Remote, hybrid form of learning, with 15 weekly meetings on Zoom and tasks to complete on the Kampus platform (Moodle)
The course is addressed to doctoral students who seek to improve their academic public speaking skills by gaining practical knowledge of public speaking as well as practicing it in a friendly classroom environment. The specific objective of the course is to develop skills needed for effective presentation of research for both informative and persuasive purposes. These skills are developed by learning the principles of and guidelines for effective public speaking in the knowledge context and by preparing and delivering several oral presentations on topics of participants’ academic interest. In practicing speechmaking special attention is given to matters particularly important in the academic contexts, such as selection of supporting materials, acknowledgement of sources, comprehensive description of own and other authors’ research, logical reasoning and effective arguing of claims, and the proper use of visual materials, especially slides. In addition, even though the course is communication rather than language oriented, its completion will improve the participants’ academic and general English.
Schedule: 15 weekly synchronous/asynchronous classes, including a 60-minute meeting on Zoom, held on Mondays at 17.00–18.00 and 30 minutes of asynchronous work on the Kampus platform to be completed each week.
Dates of online Zoom meetings: 19.10, 26.10, 2.11, 9.11, 16.11, 23.11, 30.11, 7.12, 14.12, 21.12, 11.01, 18.01, 25.01, 1.02, 8.02.
