Introduction to Philanthropy and international organizations: from social awareness to social leadership

The course is conducted jointly by the The University of Warsaw with cooperation with the University of Geneva.

The main goal of the course is to familiarize students with the concept of philanthropy from the perspective of international organizations, and to show how they manage and engage in philanthropic activities at various levels, e.g. universal regional and local, particularly to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

This course will support students in delving into the world of philanthropy, social responsibility, and the work of institutions that aim to build development.

The course is divided into two parts—theoretical and practical. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the concept of philanthropy, its possibilities, and challenges during the theoretical part. Students will learn about organizations’ internal work and people responsible for global and local development programs during the practical part. Students will have the opportunity to meet and listen to people who are institutional experts in their fields (part of the course is workshops/meetings with professionals from the United Nations ctr, as well as leaders from local environments (NGOs)).

The course aims to give the tools necessary for becoming a socially responsible person. The need for such people at this point is like never before. In a world where each of us bears the responsibility to the society in which we are, it is not negotiable.

We are responsible for building our awareness and knowledge about the world surrounding us, about regions that may be geographically distant. Still, their impact on our structure is not far off.

Taking inspiration from the World will open our eyes more thoroughly and help us get a bigger perspective on things that matter. As we value respect, tolerance, equality, integrity, freedom of expression, these are the basics for creating platforms where people feel safe and ready for change. It is essential to address them sustainably and reasonably. It is a tool for individuals to express their will, needs, challenges, and emotions.

This is to be a process in which each person will take the path of a broader understanding of a social problem and give the issue a face, emotion, knowledge, and finally find out how a specific person can solve a particular situation based on their interpretation.

The goal is to empower the individual's voice, increase empathy for those who are part of the problem and create and expand social awareness. Understanding a social problem requires constructing appropriate questions to find the backbone that builds a particular social issue.

Giuseppe Ugazio: the University of Geneva

Academic affiliation: Geneva Finance Research Institute, Geneva Center for Philanthropy; Foundations Edmond de Rothschild Chair in Behavioral Philanthropy.

Lecturer also at Harvard University, where he completed a postdoctoral fellowship (2016-2018). He has two PhDs in Philosophy and Neuroeconomics, and is a behaviorist who studies the neuropsychological mechanisms that drive complex human social behavior. Using interdisciplinary experimental methods, he studies the mechanisms of affective, cognitive and behavioral control that support social decision making. In particular, his research focuses on understanding how decision-making mechanisms compete and interact to guide choices around moral values, integrity and adherence to norms. Since 2016, the international conference speaker talked about awareness during activism, self-development, and the importance of international cooperation to create long-term and practical solutions. Since 2019, working on development projects for youth in Pakistan where during travels, she got to know the multidimensional social sectors. She traveled to Jordan, interviewing social activists and local communities about their social issues and ways of developing solutions.

She researches social responsibility in political cooperation and the “Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperations” activities in Pakistan.

Gabriele Kohler: United Nations

Prof. Koehler is currently a Senior Research Associate of the UN Research Institute on Social Development, working on the role of the rights-based developmental welfare state in the post-2015 development process and the SDGs. She has recently been advising UNICEF in Nepal and Myanmar on social protection reforms, and worked with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation on Asian welfare states.

Gabriele’s background is in international development, with a UN career spanning almost three decades. At UNCTAD, she led work on policy coherence, coordination, communications and outreach and undertook policy-related research on international trade, commodities, and investment. As the UNICEF South Asia regional advisor on social policy she advised on policy innovation opportunities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

As the United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident-Representative in Latvia, she directed programmes on social inclusion; good governance, public policy and judicial reform; environmental management; and youth and health. At UN ESCAP, Gabriele worked on development planning, economic and social policy, and the LDCs. She read macro-economics and development studies at the Universities of Regensburg, Tübingen, Munich, Wuppertal, and Ottawa.

Gabriele serves on several advisory boards, including Munich City Council’s committee on municipal development cooperation, Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF), and the German United Nations Association (DGVN). She is an elected member of the UNICEF National Committee Germany. She is an author of numerous publications from the area of social development studies.

Magda Janiszewska: United Nations Development Programme

Magda is dedicated to creating change and enabling young people to become leaders of tomorrow.

Co-founder of Alimuradova Organisation and a Programme Analyst at the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Regional Bureau for the Arab States, she is a sustainable development advocate, passionate about gender equality, women’s rights, and youth empowerment, especially in the MENA region.

In order to celebrate her Polish roots far from the homeland, Magda is also a global vice-president of the United Nations' first-ever Polish Cultural Club - Stowarzyszenie Kultury Polskiej.

She has previously worked as an integration adviser at the British Refugee Council. During her time in London, she obtained a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in migration, mobility, and development from SOAS University of London.

Shah Jehan: Chief Executive Officer (REPID)

MBA at Institute of Management Sciences; Kohat University of Science and Technology; Cooperated with USAID, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); CEO of REPID - Rural Empowerment and Institutional Development. Shah Jehan is a member of welfare and development activities of FATA in each and every forum he raises the political and developmental issues in FATA. He is also Partner of different national and international networks and clusters like Community Restoration Cluster Partner with UNDP, WASH Cluster Partner with UNICEF, Shelter Cluster Partner with UNHIBITATE, Early recovery UNOCHA, Protection, Global Refugee Youth Consultation UNHCR, Food WFP, Agriculture FAO, Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Voice of Georgia Children’s, World Learning, SUNCSA, HRDN. Shahjehan was elected Chairman of Pakistan CSOs Coalition of Health & Immunization PCCHI. With over a decade of struggling experience in managing, he offers unique blend of leadership, vision and knowledge. With many professional skills like Excellent managerial, Administrative, Monitoring & Evaluation, training facilitation and coordination skills, effective communication & presentation skills, ability to lead a team, network, & organization. Shahjehan was shortlisted for N-Peace Award as young peace builder.

Being a Chief Executive officer of REPID he continued his mission to empower youth and change communities through peace and development, political campaigns, Human Rights campaigns, Education awareness. The first project was capacity building of the local communities with USAID. This was a challenge to implement such kinds of projects in FATA. But through the mobilization of all stakeholders and youth in FATA he completed successfully and reported to the USAID. With continued efforts for Education, implemented a Non-formal Education project with the support of the Ministry of Education and trained teachers for the better Education of local communities. With continuing these efforts, in 2010 became an implementing partner of UNHCR and implemented different projects in FATA and KP like Community Based Protection CBP, Youth, advocacy, Gender, Education and child protection. Also implemented Global Refugee Youth Consultation and Youth development & empowerment directly funded from UNHCR headquarters Geneva. He designed the Women voters project to citizen voice project USAID for the better election campaigns. Ongoing leading project by Shahjehan with REPID is UNHCR flagship, Asia’s biggest project Community Oriented Primary Education.

Shah Jehan started social activities from grass root level of FATA individually and established REPID NGO in 2017 from scratch and currently implementing millions of Dollars humanitarian projects in Pakistan like Education project funded by Islamic Development Bank IDB upto 3 Millions USD by targeting one millions out of school going Children, first ever refugees park in Pakistan funded by Ministry of foreign office Japan, Livelihood project with the support of PPAF, Model BCCI with Hanns Sidel Foundation and many other projects in Pakistan.

This course will support students in delving into the world of philanthropy, social responsibility, and the work of institutions that aim to build development. Students will have the opportunity to meet and listen to people who are experts in their fields. At the end of the course students are expected to: 1. To have an overall awareness of relevant topics for philanthropy from the perspective of international organizations (global, regional and local perspective) 2. To recognize key sectors, challenges and opportunities in philanthropy 3. To be aware of the ethical, legal, political, and social contexts underlying philanthropy.

Quality of report, the depth of the defined social problem and the proposed solution, Team work

Students will be evaluated on a final report in which they set up a strategic plan for a new philanthropic organization engaging in a current social issue of their choice. This report will be developed in teams of 4-5 students and delivered through a written report (max. 2500 words, recommended 2000 words ca.) detailing the strategy of the philanthropic organization they set up to address a current social issue, to be handed in at the end of week 9 (70% of the final grade) and will be presented by the group/group leader on the very last meeting. Students activity during the meetings will be counted as 30% of final grade
