Skrócony opis: (tylko po angielsku)

This class will provide necessary tools to evaluate non-market goods

and to show explicitly the level of scarcity for environmental goods and

services as well as how costly can be their depredation. This course will

apply statistical and econometric techniques to estimate non-market

values which are the widely accepted means of measuring the

economic value of environmental and natural resources. Students will

learn to estimate demand function and willingness to pay (WTP) for

environmental goods and services. The statistical package used in this

tutorial is R.

Literatura: (tylko po angielsku)

There is no required textbook for this course; lecture notes and

supplementary material will be provided. However, for students who are

interested in Environmental Valuation field and want to study more

deeply some topics, I would recommend the following textbooks:

1. Champ, P. A, Boyle, K. J., Brown, T. C. (2017). A Primer on

Nonmarket Valuation (The Economics of Non-Market Goods

and Resources) 2nd ed. Springer; 2nd ed.

2. Haab, T., & McConnell, K. (2002). Valuing environmental and

natural resources: The econometrics of non-market valuation

(New horizons in environmental economics). Cheltenham, UK;

Resource Values: Theory and Methods 3rd Edition. Routledge;

3rd edition.

Efekty uczenia się: (tylko po angielsku)

Completing the course allows participants to familiarize with methods

and tools of microeconometrics – both theoretically and in practice. The

course provides a baseline for using the microeconometric analysis in

practice (building a model, estimation, interpretation of the results) and

self-teaching the many extensions in the context of environmental

economics problems.

Metody i kryteria oceniania: (tylko po angielsku)

Completing the course is based on homework assignments –

econometric analysis problems requiring applying the methods

introduced in class (50%) and a term paper (50%).

1. Completing the course is based on the results of home assignments

(50%) and a term paper (50%).

result = 0.5*(percentage term paper)+0.5*(percentage home assignments)

2. The final grade is calculated using the following formula:

according to the following grading scale:

result (%) grade

< 50-60) 3

< 60-70) 3.5

< 70-80) 4

< 80-90) 4.5

< 90-100) 5

< 100 5!

3. Home assignments consist of solving data analysis. Solutions are

verified and the most common mistakes are reviewed in class.

4. The term paper is an empirical application of topics learned

throughout the semester to value a natural resource. Each group

(maximum of 2 persons) will choose a suitable topic that can be

achieved. The paper must be written in English and in academic

style. It is important to properly establish the problem, the objective,

the contribution and demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret

the results. Further instructions will be provided during the semester

about the term paper.

5. Attendance is not a requirement for completing the course.

6. All students are subject to the same exam schedule (final and

retake). There are no other possibilities to take the exam and

complete the course (unless by the Dean’s decision).

7. Missing any of the exams is equivalent of failing it (the ‘NK’ grade).

8. We enforce the department’s ‘Zero tolerance for cheating’ rules.
