Skrócony opis:

The overall objective of the course is to introduce legal and non-legal instruments that operate in the global arena with regard to the sustainable functioning of the space environment and to present the problems and challenges that occur in their application.

The course improves student's competences in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of actions taken to address environmental and sustainability issues in space and ability to pose critical questions and find appropriate solutions in the area of sustainable space development.

Pełny opis:

The course Sustainable development of space provides student with a detailed understanding of the way in which suitable development of space concept is operating on a national and international level. The course examines the governance of traditional space activity: the development of satellite communications, military activity in space, the use of interplanetary probes to gain scientific data and also human spaceflight. During the courses students evaluate legal responses to the challenges posed by new developments such as space tourism, space mining and the increased environmental strain on the space environment. The issues that will be explored include: Sustainable Uses of Outer Space Activities, Introducing International Space Law, the Outer Space Treaty & follow up treaties, International Relations and Policy in Space, Environmental Space Law, Planetary Protection, Astronauts and Space Travellers and Tourism, Legal regime of space resources exploration, exploitation and utilization, National Space Legislation, Military Uses of Outer Space Activities, Regional Initiatives for Space Traffic Management.

The seminar joins lectures and workshops methods to develop students practical thinking on the area of suitable development of space environments. The seminar covers the basic legal frameworks of the topics outlined above. Seminars provides an opportunity to discuss the law in the context of the contemporary space environment thereby consolidating student’s understanding and emphasizing the implications of the law. The seminar provides opportunities to undertake research, to consider suitable development of space environments individually and in groups.

During these seminar students participate in the simulation of Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and receive feedback from tutor and from fellow students. The courses is supported by a range of electronic materials, which are made available to all students via the Gdrive.
