Novel in statu nascendi: from Daniel De Foe to Henry Fielding. Tom Jones: a picaresque novel and a Bildungsroman. Readers invited to partake in a feast. 2. Classical elegance in the age of Romanticism. Pride and Prejudice: a novel of manners. Jane Austen as a detached narrator. 3. Sisters Bronte on the heathlands Wuthering Heights: passion and misunderstanding. Narration sifted through narration Jane Eyre: gothic elements in a Victorian Bildungsroman. 4. Two pictures of human nature and Victorian society: Charles Dickens and William Thackeray. Oliver TWIST and Vanity Fair : similarities and differences in characterization and attitude to the reader. 5. Art for art’s sake.
