1. Overview of the course.

2. The process of writing and its stages.

3. Written communication within the university context.

4. Features of academic writing. Transitioning from IELTS-like essays to academic ones.

5. Building academic vocabulary and introduction to the Academic Vocabulary Project.

6. Reading into writing: note taking, summarising and paraphrasing.

7. Researching your topic: effective academic reading, developing a logical approach to analysis, synthesis and evaluation (the CRAAP test).

8. Organisation and structure in academic writing.

9. Achieving better cohesion and coherence in academic texts.

10. Criticality and argumentation in academic writing.

11. Avoiding plagiarism: referencing styles, paraphrasing and summarising.

12. Expanding the range of structures (focus on chosen grammar aspects: sentence structure, noun phrases).

13. Proofreading your own work – checklist. Peer reviews and the skill of giving feedback.

14. Individual feedback sessions.

Metody dydaktyczne: (tylko po angielsku)

The teaching approach focuses on the students and their active participation in seminars (action-oriented approach). Students often work in pairs and groups. The course is partly based on the flipped classroom method where students read materials before synchronous classes. This method allows for more efficient interaction during the seminars.

Metody i kryteria oceniania: (tylko po angielsku)

Building general academic vocabulary and discipline-specific vocabulary is a significant element of the course and each student will complete an individual project which will help them expand the range of useful language for reading and writing in the academic context.

Formative assessment plays a significant role in the development of writing skills therefore, each student will receive feedback on their written work and will be asked to act upon it.

There are three components of the final grade:

1. Academic Vocabulary Project – 30%. Ongoing work by 2nd December 2021.

2. Final Essay and Annotated Bibliography– 50%. By 12th January 2022.

3. Active participation in class and completing all tasks – 20%.
