Winter semester 2025/26

• Monographic lecture - 30 hours

(in Polish) The main goal of the lecture is to provide a general overview of selected self-cultivation philosophies in ancient Greece and in Asia and to show that the conceptual framework of philosophy as a spiritual exercise and care of the self presented by Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault can be successfully applied not only to Greek and Roman but also to some extent to Indian and Chinese traditions. We will consider the topic of self-cultivation from a comparative perspective thus showing that the very idea of philosophy is not exclusively a Western notion. Some concepts of Buddhist thought will be presented as well, both in its original Indian context as well as in its later developments in East Asia.

(in Polish) One of the most eminent phenomenon of the history of Polish philosophy – next to the Lvov-Warsaw School in 20th century – was the thought of Romanticism, with such thinkers as August Cieszkowski (1814-1894), Karol Libelt (1807-1875), Bronisław Trentowski (1808-1869), and also Edward Dembowski (1822-1846) and Henryk Kamieński (1813-1866), not to mention the Maurycy Mochnacki (1803-1834), who could be regarded as the effective founder of the Polish philosophy of 19th century. It is a consensus in historiography that one of the most impactful and prevailing feature of the ideas of this time was the practical philosophy, i.e. the theory of action, history, and ethics. Hence one of its names: the philosophy of act (filozofia czynu, Philosophie der Tat).

(in Polish) Celem zajęć jest wprowadzenie w podstawowe pojęcia, kierunki, metody i zagadnienia estetyki filozoficznej jako jednej z ważnych dziedzin filozofii. Wprawdzie estetyka jako systematyczna refleksja filozoficzna jest stosunkowo młoda, niemniej szeroko pojęta refleksja estetyczna towarzyszy filozofii od samych, presokratejskich początków. Z tej racji zagadnienia kluczowe dla współczesnej problematyki estetycznej oraz współczesnej kultury, zostaną opatrzone również historycznym tłem. W ten sposób zaprezentowane zostaną także etapy usamodzielniania się estetyki w obrębie najważniejszych filozoficznych paradygmatów. W trakcie zajęć zostanie podjęta problematyka sztuki, twórczości artystycznej, relacji między zmysłowością a uczuciowością, doświadczenia estetycznego, oraz omówione zostaną klasyczne pojęcia estetyczne, jak naśladowanie, reprezentacja, piękno, forma, tragizm czy wzniosłość, które ujęte zostaną w kontekście współczesności.

(in Polish) Celem wykładu będzie zastanowienie się nad współczesną sytuacją filozofii w zakresie jej najbardziej podstawowej problematyki ontologicznej i teoriopoznawczej, którą łącznie proponuję określać mianem problematyki metafizycznej. Częścią tego namysłu będzie wskazanie na główną tendencję rozwojową, za sprawą której wyłonił się współczesny paradygmat filozofii. Tendencja ta wiąże się z właściwym filozofii nowożytnej nominalizmem i transcendentalizmem oraz z problemami, na jakie określone przez nie sposoby myślenia natrafiały w konfrontacji przede wszystkim z gwałtownym rozwojem matematyki i nauk przyrodniczych w ciągu ostatnich dwóch stuleci. Jednak głównym zadaniem wykładu będzie poszukiwanie nowych pojęć i pomysłów, które pozwoliłyby filozofii skuteczniej radzić sobie z wyzwaniami płynącymi ze strony kształtującego się na naszych oczach i nieustannie ewoluującego obrazu świata.

The course will focus on the evolution of the idea of man as a project. Thinking of man as a being possessing an “undetermined” nature or in need of refinement is a connecting point between religion, philosophy and politics. Each of these areas has seen the emergence of ideas about the ideal of human life and related anthropotechnics. Although the techniques for training individuals change, the goal itself - human transformation - remains intact. The aspiration to impose physical, moral discipline on individuals is a common feature of seemingly disparate traditions. It unites ancient moralists, Christian anachoretics, utopian socialists and modern transhumanists.

(in Polish) Wykład monograficzny z filozofii średniowiecznej jest rozwinięciem i pogłębieniem problematyki wykładanej w ramach zajęć kursowych z historii filozofii średniowiecznej, a więc zajęć obejmujących również okres patrystyczny, czyli chronologicznie zahaczający jeszcze o późną starożytność. Określenie przedmiotu mianem filozofii średniowiecznej jest tu jednak potrzebne nie tylko po to, aby ukazać ciągłość z obowiązkowym dla studentów filozofii kursem historii filozofii I, ale ma też uzasadnienie teoretyczne. Późny antyk rozpatrywany jest tu bardziej pod kątem rozwinięcia w okresie średniowiecza, aniżeli sposobu, w jaki wyłania się ze źródeł wcześniejszych, starożytnych. Zajęcia są prezentacją dziejów filozofii w układzie problemowym, co pozwala dopełnić obrazu tychże dziejów o tematy, które nie zawsze mieszczą się w ramach kursu obowiązkowego, a także ukazać wybrane kwestie w różnych przekrojach czasowych i zestawić ze sobą rozwiązania z różnych okresów.

The lecture is devoted to the discussion of the most important philosophical systems and doctrines of the Middle and Far East. Particular attention will be focused on their relationship with religion. The most important issues raised in philosophical systems will be discussed: cosmogony, cosmology, deity and its character and relation to the created world. In the individual blocks ontological, metaphysical and epistemological problems will be elaborated. In first two lectures the beginnings of philosophical and religious thinking in the Ancient East will be presented. The following blocks Indian philosophy, Buddhist philosophy, Japanese philosophy, Chinese philosophy, Jewish philosophy, Muslim philosophy and contemporary Persian thought will be analysed.

The lecture is to be a systematic introduction into the specific character of the philosophical reflection on the phenomenon of culture. The starting point is the conviction that culture can be understood only as intertwined with man and vice versa. Man can be understood and can understand him-/herself only within the horizon of his-/her entanglement in culture, in its axiological, symbolic, imaginative dimensions. Man can be given to him-/herself only through culturally determined forms of experiencing his-/her being-in-the-world. The crucial category will be that of cultural experience and the main methodological perspective will be the anthropological philosophy of culture, which point at and analyze the relations between man and culture. The particular accent will be put on the dynamic, polyphonic, multidimensional and tensive character of culture.

(in Polish) Najpierw podjęty zostanie temat relacji między filozofią a literaturą (zwłaszcza powieściową), a następnie różne sposoby interpretowania twórczości Dostojewskiego – zarówno klasyczne, jak i najbardziej współczesne kontynuacje czy odpowiedniki. Obszarem zaś głównym prezentacji będzie późna twórczość Fiodora Dostojewskiego (Biesy, Młodzik, Bracia Karamazow, Dziennik pisarza).

First, the topic of the relationship between philosophy and literature (especially the novel) will be discussed, followed by various ways of interpreting Dostoyevsky's work – both classical and the most contemporary continuations or equivalents. The main area of the presentation will be the late work of Fyodor Dostoyevsky (The Demons, The Young Man, The Brothers Karamazov, The Writer's Diary).

- Introductory issues: the subject and scope of philosophy of religion; diversity of its practicing; philosophy of religion and discipline and related qualities (religion, religious studies, theology); etymological issues; formation, development, relative separateness of philosophy of religion within philosophy,

- Concepts of the essence and sources of religion: psychological reductionism (Freud, Jung, Fromm); sociological reductionism (Marx, Durkheim, Weber); phenomenology of religion (Otto, Scheler, van der Leeuw, Eliade); religion as an inspiration for philosophy (neotomism, Russian religious philosophy, Protestant theology, Pilosophy of dialogue).

The lecture on the political philosophy presents all the issues that make up this sub-discipline of philosophy: from political theology, through the main issues of political philosophy such as freedom, theoretical and practical reason, the system of political community, property - dominion, empire, human rights, individual and collective self-determination; philosophical positions on history (the theory of eternal return, linear political time, progress in politics, the category of revolution, conservatism) to the philosophical foundations of political science (raison of state, biopolitics).

The course shall concentrate on the development of the Socratic thread in Patristic and Medieval thought. It will take up the question of self-discovery in the anthropology of Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, Bernard of Clairvaux, Abelard, Bonaventure, Master Eckhart, and others.
